Directions: The temple is visible as you drive along lower Jalan Gasing. It is opposite the La Salle School.
Info / Insights: Plans for the Thai Buddhist Chetawan Temple in Petaling Jaya was first conceived in 1956. Without the motivation of a by-election, the then Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman gave a government grant of RM 100,000 in 1957.
Construction was finally completed in 1962 and a "Raising The 'Chor Fah" ceremony was officiated by His Majesty King Bhumiphol of Thailand. The King was accompanied by his wife, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.
Today, a Bodhi tree stands on the grounds, surrounded by the two main temple buildings. With intricate carvings and signature Thai architecture, the Chetawan Temple remains one of the few royal sponsored temples outside of Thailand.
The current Chief Abbot of the PJ Thai Chetawan Temple is the Venerable Phrakhru Sophitchariyaphorn. By coincidence, he was born in the same year the temple was built, to a farming family in Kedah.
Some of the festivals or celebrations observed at the Chetawan Temple include Vesak or Visakha Puja (Buddha Day), Dhamma Day, Loy Krathong and Songkran (Water Festival). The temple is also popularly referred to as the PJ Thai Temple.
