Directions: From the Shangri-la Hotel junction, drive towards Bukit Bintang. It is easy to miss the entrance as the hotel is concealed from the main road. The entry is right under the overhead Raja Chulan LRT (monorail) station, just after Kompleks Antarabangsa and before Wisma Genting.
Info / Insights: Crowne Plaza Mutiara Kuala Lumpur sits on a five-hectare property that was once the Kuala Lumpur Hilton. This endearing landmark of KL's Golden Triangle used to overlook the race course which is now KLCC.
When veteran British actor David Niven was staying at the hotel during the filming of Paper Tiger in 1974, he was puzzled by the roar and cheers coming from what appeared to be an empty track below. Little did he realise then that it was an 'off-course' race where thousands of punters in the stands stalked the horses by audio commentary :) .
Being one of a handful of 5-star hotels in KL back then, its Nirwana Ballroom was the place for premier events. The swanky Tin Mine discotheque enjoyed a long and successful run, catering to KL's rich and famous during its heydays.
In 2004, the hotel was refurbished and re-branded as Mutiara Hotel. It subsequently became the Crowne Plaza Kuala Lumpur. The 565-room hotel is now managed by the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG).
While there are new F&B outlets at the Crowne Plaza, the ever-popular Planters' Inn coffee house retained its original name from yesteryears.
