Caution: The stretch of road from Tangkak to Segamat (also known as Muar Road) has some very narrow hairpin bends. Speeding is endemic in this area despite several fatal accidents.
Info / Insights: The plateau peak of Gunung Ledang (or Mount Ophir) is often shrouded in mist or obscured by low-lying clouds. Like the resident fairy princess known as Puteri Gunung Ledang, she can be bright, cheery for one minute and dark, ominous at the next.
Peaking at 1,276m (4,185 feet) above sea level, climbers to the top will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Malacca Straits (provided it is a clear and non-hazy day). With several waterfalls and hiking trails, Gunung Ledang is popular with nature lovers, campers and bird watchers. The foothill (near the park entrance) has facilities such as souvenir shops, chalets, restrooms and even a karaoke lounge. Sheesh!
Gunung Ledang is teeming with mystical legends from Malay folklore. Even till today, there are tales of supernatural encounters by locals and visitors alike. Perhaps, the mysticism is reinforced by regular reports of expedition teams getting lost. Many of these Malaysian and Singaporean adventurers were ill-prepared to begin with.
The legend of the princess inspired the movie Puteri Gunung Ledang (see review by TV Smith) and the successful PGL The Musical.
