Location: Jalan Masjid India, 50100 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Intro: MyCen Directions' Ramadan Bazaar Series documents and celebrates the many colourful bazaars of the annual fasting month (Bulan Puasa). Food appears to be an unifying factor as more and more people of different race and religion are seen mingling and shopping for food together at these places.
The sheer variety of mouth-watering delicacies, its cross-cultural appeal and the carnival-like atmosphere make this an unique Malaysian institution. Also known as 'Bazar Ramadan' or 'Pasar Juadah', the makeshift stalls usually open from around 4 pm to 7 pm daily, with many traders breaking fast on location.
Directions: The Masjid India area can be accessed from Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman or by Jalan Munshi Abdullah or Jalan Ampang.
Info / Notes: The bazaar is big and busy, stretching from near Masjid India (the mosque) to Semua House. Another long row of stalls run parallel in the back lane of Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman, starting from Campbell Complex. In between, at every side lane, in every nook and cranny, there are stalls selling textile, garment, artificial flowers, festive decor and cookies. The Ramadan food stalls are concentrated near the front and side of Malayan Mansion.
Underneath the frenzy, things appear well organised with DBKL officials, police personnel, Alam Flora cleaners and even an ambulance on standby.
Unfortunately, those pesky motorcycles are allowed to run riot on this wonderful pedestrian bazaar.
The Masjid India area is sometimes referred to as 'Little India' of KL, though Lebuh Ampang, Brickfields and Sentul stake its claim to that moniker as well. Masjid India refers to the century-old mosque Masjid India (http://www.masjidindia.com/), frequented by the Indian-Muslim community in the city.
