Location: Jalan Raja Alang, 50300 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Intro: MyCen Directions' Ramadan Bazaar Series documents and celebrates the many colourful bazaars of the annual fasting month (Bulan Puasa). Food appears to be an unifying factor as more and more people of different race and religion are seen mingling and shopping for food together at these places.
The sheer variety of mouth-watering delicacies, its cross-cultural appeal and the carnival-like atmosphere make this an unique Malaysian institution. Also known as 'Bazar Ramadan' or 'Pasar Juadah', the makeshift stalls usually open from around 4 pm to 7 pm daily, with many traders breaking fast on location.
Directions: Jalan Raja Alang can be accessed from Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (junction with a Shell station) or by Jalan Raja Abdullah at the junction of the Kampung Baru Mosque.
Info / Notes: I have visited hundreds of Ramadan bazaars over the years and this remains one of my favourite places. It is grand and spectacular. Just walk in the middle of the road from the Kampung Baru Mosque (Masjid Jamek) to Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (Batu Road) and you will see what I mean.
Think of the area as one giant Ramadan bazaar. Stalls selling food and festive goods zigzag via Lorong Raja Bot to the Chow Kit Wet Market and right up to Jalan Haji Hussein. One can spend hours here and not be bored. If you wish to buka puasa in the area itself, why not walk behind to Jalan Raja Muda Musa. There, you will find a very interesting array of food stalls, including the original Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa.
Jalan Raja Alang is also a bustling fruit and vegetable street market on normal days (and nights). When you are at Jalan Raja Alang, you may want to check out the Gurdwara Tat Khalsa Sikh Temple, the largest Sikh Temple in South-East Asia.
