Thean Hou on the 8th: Fire & Rain in HD (High-Definition)

When I arrived at the Thean Hou Temple (watch driving video here) on the eighth day of Chinese New Year, the sky was really gloomy. Dark clouds were swirling overhead. I thought to myself; since I can't avoid the impending rain, why not incorporate rain into the video. After all, water and lights usually blend magically on camera. True enough, there were plenty of fire and rain. For the exterior shot, I let the camera roll until raindrops pounded the lens. The rain was so hard even the lantern courtyard upstairs was flooded. I took refuge inside the temple for about an hour. That was when I was glad I brought along a Manfrotto tabletop tripod. With the tiny LX3 attached to it, I was able to grab shots from the altar and on the flooded floor. This video is presented in full glorious HD colours and resolution.
Note: The video embedded on this page is in HD. If you are playing from the YouTube page, you will notice that all HD videos default to lousy normal quality upon loading. There is no intermediate HQ quality. Check for a 'Watch in HD' link under the bottom right of the player there when it starts playing. Click on it and it will launch a much bigger player screen for a clearer and better viewing experience.

Playback Help: Mycen Videos are mostly presented in high quality widescreen 16:9 standard-definition (SD) and high-definition (HD), both in hi-fi stereo. By default, the embedded player here loads a standard quality 360p or 480p resolution to accommodate users with slower connections. To switch to higher quality and clearer playback, select the 720p or 1080p option (if available) on the bottom right of the player after pressing play. The transition to HQ or HD may take a few seconds. If things get stuck, just reload the page and try again.
Playing HD or HQ requires a reasonably fast internet connection and reasonably competent hardware for smooth playback. Firstly, let the player's pink loading line fill completely. If the video is still jerky when you replay after that, try closing other programs on your computer to free up resources. Even then, heavy Internet traffic during peak hours might still slow down some connections. If all else fails, simply revert to normal quality playback by clicking on the same button again.
