Directions: Southbound vehicles can enter via Jalan Tun Razak just after the RHB Building on left or via the junction at Times Square/Sg Wang/Jalan Imbi. Northbound vehicles from KL-Seremban Highway enter the tunnel near the Sg Besi Airport. You can exit either into Jalan Sultan Ismail (Sungei Wang Plaza) or to Jalan Tun Razak near Time and Menara AA.

Info / Insights: SMART is the acronym for Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel, a dual-function tunnel. It helps alleviate flooding in the city of Kuala Lumpur and function as a underground motorway tunnel. It serves as an alternative route for motorists heading to the KL-Seremban Highway when traveling southbound, and also as an underground bypass to the Bukit Bintang area and Jalan Tun Razak for northbound motorists.

One of the side effects of its split personality is that the motorway tunnel may close during severe storms. That's when it does double duty as a drainage channel. The tunnel usually remains close after the water has subsided for clean up operations. It also shuts down for periodic maintenance and inspection. There are actually three tunnels within a large underground tunnel. The primary one serves as a large water drainage pipe while the other two carry motor traffic in opposite directions.

For the motorway, only cars, MPVs and SUVs not exceeding 2m in height are allowed through. Motorcycles are barred. There are 15 emergency exits including 6 escape shafts to the surface. Over 200 CCTV cameras monitor the traffic inside the tunnel.

Project was incepted by MMC Corp Berhad-Gamuda Berhad Joint Venture. The SMART project is implemented under the supervision of the Drainage and Irrigation Department of Malaysia and the Malaysia Highway Authority.

Toll Rate: RM 2 one-way.
