Directions: Take the KL-Ampang Elevated Highway (AKLEH) from Kuala Lumpur, if possible. Exit at the end of the highway near Ampang town. As you join the main road, you will be greeted by a never ending jam due to the right turn to Galaxy Ampang and the District Police Headquarters ahead. Do not turn here but go straight where there is another traffic lights junction with another round of congestion. After this junction, you will see the Ampang LRT station on your right. The Ampang Traffic Police Station will be the next landmark.

From here, stay on the right lane and turn right at the traffic lights facing the Petronas and Caltex stations. If you are on the right course, you should see the Spectrum Shopping Mall and Bintang Supermarket on your right. Head for the T-junction and turn left for the temple. During the festival, the road will be choked with cars and lined with jaga kereta. Park just after the temple, at the Dialysis Center, where parking charges are relatively reasonable at RM 3.

Info / Insights: Celebrated for nine days on the ninth month of the Lunar Calendar, the Nine Emperor Gods Festival at the Ampang Kau Ong Yah Lam Thian Kong Temple is a not-to-be-missed event. The deities (and devotees) are feted with vegetarian food and a traditional Chinese opera. The noisy, colourful and smoky celebrations end with a bare feet fire-crossing ceremony. See the links to the the photo essays below for more on the myths, rituals and human hypocrisy surrounding the festival.
